Shohei Ohtani Red Refractor Rookie Autograph Card Up for Auction at Goldin

One of Shohei Ohtani’s rarest rookie autographs is drawing serious bidding at Goldin. A 2018 Bowman Chrome Rookie Autographs Red Refractor Shohei Ohtani signed rookie card, numbered 2/5 and graded BGS Gem Mint 9.5, has reached $793,000 in Goldin’s Summer Goldin 100 auction.

Goldin highlighted the card on X, calling it a “massive Ohtani grail” and saying it “could be the single best and single most valuable Ohtani card to come up for public auction.”

The Goldin auction listing identifies the card as the Red Refractor version of Ohtani’s 2018 Bowman Chrome Rookie Autograph, with only five copies produced. This example carries the 2/5 serial number. Condition adds another layer to the card. Beckett graded it BGS Gem Mint 9.5, with Goldin describing the card as a True Gem+ example. The auction house lists a population of just two at the grade.

Goldin is also emphasizing the card’s place in Ohtani’s rookie-year collecting history, describing it as a true MLB rookie card from 2018 rather than a later-career parallel or commemorative issue. The combination is difficult to duplicate: an Ohtani rookie autograph, Bowman Chrome branding, a Red Refractor limited to five copies and a Gem Mint grade.

Ohtani cards have already produced some enormous transactions in 2026, although two of the biggest happened outside a traditional public auction.

In July, CollectiblesNews.com reported that Fanatics Collect brokered a $3.365 million private sale of a 2018 Bowman Chrome Ohtani Superfractor 1/1. The BGS 9.5 card was described by Fanatics Collect at the time as the most expensive Ohtani card ever sold.

Just over two weeks later, an even larger Ohtani transaction emerged from a much newer card. Secure Collectibles acquired the one-of-one 2026 Topps Chrome Dual Gold Logoman English and Kanji autograph redemption for $11 million. The card had been pulled from a hobby box after attracting several multimillion-dollar bounty offers.

Those sales are important context for Goldin’s claim about the current Red Refractor. The $3.365 million Superfractor changed hands through a private sale, while the $11 million Dual Gold Logoman was a direct acquisition by Secure Collectibles. Goldin is positioning the Red Refractor as a potential benchmark specifically for an Ohtani card offered through public auction.

Unlike the $11 million Logoman, the card at Goldin does not rely on game-used patches or other memorabilia. Its appeal comes from a more traditional high-end card formula: Ohtani’s rookie year, an on-card autograph, Bowman Chrome and a Red Refractor print run of only five.

Whether it ultimately supports Goldin’s suggestion that it could become the most valuable Ohtani card to come up for public auction remains to be seen. But with bidding already at $650,000, the 2018 Bowman Chrome Red Refractor Rookie Autograph is shaping up to be one of the Ohtani sales worth watching closely.
