Welcome to Alexandria Sign From The Walking Dead Sells for $22,500 at Heritage Auctions

Welcome to Alexandria Sign From The Walking Dead

One of the most recognizable pieces of Alexandria from The Walking Dead has found a new home, with the original “Welcome to Alexandria” sign selling for $22,500 at Heritage Auctions. The large production-used sign finished as the highest-selling item in Heritage’s October 30 Walking Dead Universe Hollywood/Entertainment Auction, which offered hundreds of costumes, props and set pieces from AMC’s long-running television franchise.

The “Welcome to Alexandria” sign is an original metal sign framed with wood and hand-painted on one side with the words “WELCOME to ALEXANDRIA.” Measuring 72 inches by 36 inches, the piece also includes a wooden hanging bracket on the reverse. Heritage identifies it as an original production item and notes that it shows wear and aging associated with its use during filming.

The sign first appears in Season 9, Episode 6, “Who Are You Now?,” during the period following the show’s major time jump. In the episode, a young Judith Grimes leads Magna and her group to Alexandria, where Michonne reluctantly allows the newcomers inside the community. That appearance placed the sign at the entrance to one of the series’ most important settlements during a major transition in the story.

It later returned in Season 11, Episode 16, “Acts of God,” by which time the sign had been given additional aging and distressing. During that episode, Commonwealth soldiers place their banners over it, visually marking the organization’s takeover of Alexandria. Heritage says the surviving prop exhibits intentional studio distressing along with weathering, fading, staining, scuffing, alterations and other signs of production use.

That history gives the sign a different type of appeal from the character costumes and handheld props that made up much of the auction. Instead of being associated with only one character, it represents Alexandria itself, the fortified community that became a central location in The Walking Dead for much of the later series. Its six-foot width also makes it a substantial piece of production scenery rather than a small display prop.

Heritage offered the sign with a certificate of authenticity from AMC and Heritage, further documenting its connection to the production. The auction house described the October 30 event as offering material directly from the archives of the network behind the series, including costumes, props and set pieces spanning The Walking Dead universe.

When bidding was complete, the Alexandria sign reached $22,500 including buyer’s premium, the highest result of the auction. The next-highest result was a group of four Negan character accessories at $16,250, while a 55-piece Rick Grimes costume and accessory group sold for $13,750.

The result puts a piece of the show’s physical world at the top of the sale rather than a weapon or costume worn by one of its major characters. For a series built around communities such as Alexandria, the Kingdom, Hilltop and the Commonwealth, the weathered entrance sign became a recurring visual marker of the place Rick Grimes and his group eventually called home.
