McDonald’s Confirms SpongeBob x One Piece Happy Meal Coming to U.S. September 15

McDonald’s has finally given U.S. collectors a date for its SpongeBob SquarePants x One Piece Happy Meal. The collaboration takes characters from Bikini Bottom and reimagines them as familiar faces from One Piece. SpongeBob becomes Monkey D. Luffy, Patrick Star takes on Roronoa Zoro, Sandy Cheeks becomes Nami and Squidward is transformed into Sanji.
The company confirmed Monday that the crossover will arrive at participating U.S. McDonald’s restaurants on September 15, sharing a new animated video with the message, “we’ve truly entered the great Happy Meal era. SpongeBob x One Piece coming 9.15.”
Other pairings shown for the promotion include Gary as Tony Tony Chopper, Pearl as Nico Robin, Larry the Lobster as Franky, Mr. Krabs as Jinbe, Plankton as Usopp, Mrs. Puff as Big Mom and the Flying Dutchman as Blackbeard. There is also a second SpongeBob design based on Gear 5 Luffy. The September 15 date answers one of the biggest questions surrounding the promotion since it first surfaced.
CollectiblesNews.com reported on August 13 that the SpongeBob x One Piece Happy Meal collaboration was headed to McDonald’s locations in the United States, although an exact launch date had not yet been announced. Interest only grew after McDonald’s released an animated commercial for the crossover. CollectiblesNews.com covered the commercial on August 20 as it spread quickly across social media, giving fans a better look at the unusual character mashups. The latest McDonald’s post now puts a date on the U.S. hunt.
The crossover has already begun appearing in other countries, giving collectors overseas an early opportunity to track down the different toys. The designs have attracted attention because McDonald’s did not simply produce separate SpongeBob and One Piece figures. Instead, each collectible combines recognizable elements from both franchises.
