Starlog Magazine Returns to Print With 100-Page Issue

Starlog Magazine

Starlog is returning to print with a new 100-page science-fiction magazine that continues the publication that began in 1976. STARLOG: The Magazine, Vol. 2 #1 is officially Issue 375 of the original Starlog run and will reach newsstands and begin shipping to preorder customers on November 13. The first printing is priced at $19.99 and features original cover art by Gabriel Yeganyan.

The perfect-bound magazine is edited by editor-in-chief Annalee Newitz and is divided into three sections titled Space-Time, Alternate Worlds and The Unknown. Across its 100 pages, the issue contains 27 articles covering science fiction, science, film and television.

Among the featured pieces is a conversation between Star Trek actor LeVar Burton and particle physicist Chanda Prescod-Weinstein about Star Trek and the real science behind it. The issue also explores the hidden politics of Dune and features a look at the rise of Sauron with the star and creators of The Rings of Power. Another feature examines 10 iconic movie starships and how they were made, while a separate article looks back at how Starlog covered Star Wars before the movie became a cultural phenomenon. Other topics include farming beyond Earth, satellites made from wood, dinosaurs of the future and a scientist grading lasers from science fiction.

The magazine also places a strong emphasis on original artwork. In addition to Yeganyan’s cover, Starlog says commissioned illustration appears throughout the issue.

The new issue will be available both directly from Starlog and through traditional newsstands. In the United States, Starlog says the magazine is expected at Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Target, Walmart, CVS, Walgreens and supermarket magazine racks including Publix, Kroger, Albertsons, Meijer, H-E-B and Wegmans, although individual store inventory will vary. Canadian distribution will include Indigo, Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart, Walmart, Sobeys, Save-On-Foods and Rexall.

Collectors ordering directly through Starlog will receive the same edition being distributed to newsstands. Starlog says direct orders are shipped in rigid stay-flat cardboard mailers intended to keep the magazine flat and protect the cover during shipping. The November release is currently being sold as a one-time purchase rather than a recurring magazine subscription. Starlog says future issues will be sold separately.

Starlog first began its run in 1976, making 2026 the publication’s 50th anniversary year. The revived magazine describes its new mission as exploring the stories, science and ideas shaping the future while continuing the science-fiction focus associated with the Starlog name.

STARLOG: The Magazine, Vol. 2 #1 is available for preorder now for $19.99 and is scheduled to ship and arrive on newsstands November 13.
