Iron Maiden Turns ‘Somewhere in Time’ Into 40th Anniversary Graphic Album With Vinyl and Collector Editions

Iron Maiden is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Somewhere in Time with a new collectible graphic album that expands the 1986 record into a science-fiction anthology featuring stories inspired by the album’s eight tracks. Somewhere in Time: The Graphic Album is being produced by Iron Maiden and Z2 and is scheduled for release March 2, 2027. The project brings together a large group of comic writers and artists to reinterpret the futuristic world associated with one of Iron Maiden’s most visually distinctive albums, with multiple editions aimed at both comic readers and longtime Maiden collectors.
Iron Maiden says the Platinum and Deluxe editions will come housed in a metallic “Time Machine” slipcase with a green acetate targeting lens. The collectible packages also incorporate rare 7-inch singles of “Wasted Years” and “Stranger in a Strange Land,” along with limited-edition vintage-inspired Eddie T-shirts and a new interview with guitarist Adrian Smith looking back at Somewhere in Time four decades later.
The graphic album will feature covers by Blake Armstrong, Tony Harris, Jay Geldhof and Dan Mumford, with an introduction by Bill Sienkiewicz. The creative team includes David Dastmalchian, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Andy MacDonald, Steve Niles, Goran Parlov, Benjamin Raab, Deric Hughes, Matt Haley, Dan Hernandez, Adam Markiewicz, Stan Yak, Corin Hardy, Montos, John Reppion, Leah Moore, Vincent Locke, Henry Sansom and Davide Fabbri.
Z2’s Platinum Edition adds several particularly collectible elements. The oversized 12-by-12-inch hardcover edition includes a bookplate signed by Adrian Smith and is limited to 500 copies. It also comes with the metallic Time Machine slipcase, a red-colorway “Stranger in a Strange Land” 7-inch single, a green-colorway “Wasted Years” 7-inch single, four art prints by Harris, Armstrong, Geldhof and Mumford, four limited-edition gold-foil trading cards in a collector’s case and a first-printing certificate of authenticity.
The project follows Z2 and Iron Maiden’s earlier Piece of Mind graphic album and again uses the band’s music as the foundation for new illustrated stories. This time, the anthology is built around the sci-fi themes of Somewhere in Time, with Z2 describing the stories as exploring both the far future and distant past represented across the album.
Somewhere in Time originally arrived in 1986, and its futuristic artwork and imagery have remained closely associated with the album ever since. The new graphic album uses that visual identity as the foundation for an expanded 40th anniversary project rather than simply reproducing the original album artwork.
Somewhere in Time: The Graphic Album will be released March 2, 2027 and is available for preorder through Z2.
