LEGO Unveils Massive 5,363-Piece Godzilla Set With Black Friday Mothra Bonus

Godzilla is officially joining the LEGO lineup with a massive 5,363-piece LEGO Ideas set that stands more than 27 inches tall and will arrive just in time for Black Friday. LEGO Ideas Godzilla set 21375 is based on Legendary’s Monsterverse version of the King of the Monsters and will be available beginning November 27 for $449.99 through LEGO Stores and LEGO.com.
LEGO says the new model is the largest LEGO Ideas set it has ever launched. When posed with its Heat Ray, the completed Godzilla stands 27.5 inches, or 70 centimeters, tall, measures approximately 10.5 inches wide and 15.5 inches long. LEGO emphasized the scale by noting that a standard LEGO minifigure reaches only as high as Godzilla’s ankle. The model is designed as a large display piece while still giving builders several posing options. Godzilla features adjustable shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers along with a posable head, arms, legs and tail. The build recreates the creature’s textured scaly skin, jagged dorsal fins and sweeping tail, while builders can remove the tongue and replace it with an included Heat Ray element to recreate Godzilla’s upward atomic-breath pose.
The set began as a submission to the LEGO Ideas crowdsourcing platform from New York-based fan designer Matthew Esposito, who uses the LEGO Ideas name MattE720. His Godzilla project reached the required 10,000 supporters before being reviewed and approved by the LEGO Ideas Review Board for development as an official set. Esposito said the model was a passion project combining his longtime interests in both LEGO and Godzilla, with the character’s head proving to be the most challenging part of the original design.
Collectors purchasing the set during its launch weekend will also have a second Godzilla-themed build to chase. From November 27 through November 30, customers who buy LEGO Ideas Godzilla through LEGO.com or LEGO Stores will receive LEGO Ideas Godzilla Logo and Footprint set 40888 as a gift with purchase while supplies last. The 359-piece bonus set recreates the Godzilla logo against a city skyline and includes Mothra perched on one of the buildings. It also includes a brick-built Godzilla footprint that LEGO says is exactly the same size as the foot on the full 5,363-piece Godzilla model. The logo display and footprint can be shown connected together or displayed separately.
The November 27 launch is tied to LEGO’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday event as well as Godzilla Day. LEGO is also offering LEGO Insiders in select markets a chance to enter a sweepstakes for a signed set and is previewing a Godzilla poster reward through the Insiders program. The release marks Godzilla’s arrival in the LEGO Group’s portfolio through Legendary’s Monsterverse. LEGO describes the model as a tribute to a character whose history stretches back to his first screen appearance in 1954, while this particular set draws on the modern Monsterverse interpretation.
Matthew Esposito said,“Building LEGO Godzilla was a real passion project. I’ve loved both LEGO building and Godzilla for years, so I wanted to capture his shape, scale and character as accurately as I could. The head was definitely the biggest challenge, but seeing the model come together and eventually reach 10,000 supporters after more than two years was incredible. I’m so grateful to everyone who supported the project and helped make this dream a reality.”
“We were thrilled to partner with the LEGO Group to bring our titan to life in brick form,” said Amber Sheppo, SVP, Consumer Products & Partnerships at Legendary Entertainment. “From Matthew’s original vision to this truly epic creation, the LEGO Group has been an incredible partner every step of the way.”
