Val Kilmer ‘Iceman’ Top Gun Helmet Sells for $106,250 at Goldin

A production-made flight helmet and gear ensemble created for Val Kilmer’s “Iceman” in Top Gun has sold for $106,250 at Goldin, finishing as one of the biggest results from the auction house’s Fall Movie Prop & Memorabilia Auction. The centerpiece of the lot is a production-made HGU-33/P flight helmet created specifically for Kilmer’s portrayal of Lieutenant Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the 1986 film. The helmet features the character’s familiar blue lightning-bolt graphics, with “ICEMAN” displayed across the back and the fist-and-lightning-bolt design appearing along the sides. The ensemble also includes an oxygen mask, hose connector and High-G suit pants.
Adding to the lot is a handwritten and signed note from Top Gun director Tony Scott. The note includes a sketch by Scott along with the message, “A Top Gun gift in return for all your generosity. Many thanks.” Goldin offered the ensemble with documentation from Fiore, Ursa Authentic and Grad Authentication.
The helmet is closely tied to one of the defining characters from the original Top Gun. Kilmer’s Iceman begins the film as Maverick’s highly competitive rival at the Navy’s elite fighter weapons school, with the two pilots eventually developing a mutual respect. The character’s personalized flight helmet, with its bold blue graphics and unmistakable “ICEMAN” lettering, became one of the visual signatures of Kilmer’s performance.
The $106,250 result was the second-highest sale from the same Goldin movie memorabilia auction. As CollectiblesNews.com reported earlier, a production-made powder-blue boxing robe and shorts costume created for Mr. T’s Clubber Lang in Rocky III sold for $114,998.75, making it the auction’s highest-selling item.
The Iceman ensemble finished well ahead of another Rocky-related piece in the sale. A pair of Rocky IV Adidas boxing shoes signed by Sylvester Stallone, Carl Weathers and Dolph Lundgren sold for $81,250, giving the auction three movie memorabilia lots that crossed the $80,000 mark.
The Iceman helmet stands apart because it combines one of the film’s most recognizable pieces of character imagery with additional flight gear and a personal item connected directly to the movie’s director.
