U.S. Mint Unveils 2027 Baseball, Soccer, Golf, Softball and Snowboarding Quarters

Sports Quarters

The United States Mint has revealed the designs for its 2027 circulating coins, giving collectors their first look at a new four-year series that will put youth sports on quarters and Paralympic sports on half dollars. Beginning in 2027, the Mint’s new Youth Sports Coin Collection will introduce five different quarter reverses each year through 2030. The inaugural lineup will feature baseball, golf, soccer, softball and snowboarding, while the 2027 half dollar will honor wheelchair basketball.

All five 2027 quarters will share a new George Washington obverse created specifically for the program. The portrait shows Washington in civilian attire from a three-quarter angle. The Mint notes that this will be the fifth unique depiction of Washington to appear on a U.S. quarter.

The reverse designs put young athletes directly at the center of each coin. The baseball quarter depicts a batter at the plate with a catcher positioned behind him, while the golf design shows a young golfer completing a swing against a background patterned like the surface of a golf ball. The soccer quarter features a young player celebrating beside an oversized soccer ball. The softball design captures a batter making contact as a catcher waits behind the plate, while the snowboarding quarter shows a rider airborne above a winter landscape. Each reverse prominently identifies the sport and carries the 2027 date.

The half dollar will also receive a major redesign in 2027. A new portrait of President John F. Kennedy will appear on the obverse, showing Kennedy gazing upward with what the Mint describes as a warm and hopeful expression. Unlike the quarter series, the Kennedy portrait will remain common to all four years of the Paralympic Sports Half Dollar program.

Wheelchair basketball will be the first Paralympic sport featured on the reverse. The design depicts an athlete maneuvering a sports wheelchair while controlling a basketball, with “WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL” incorporated around the edge of the coin.

The sports lineup has already been set through 2030. In 2028, the quarters will feature American football, swimming, gymnastics, lacrosse and track and field. Basketball, wrestling, tennis, cheerleading and karate follow in 2029, while figure skating, skiing, skateboarding, volleyball and ice hockey will close out the program in 2030.

The Paralympic half dollars will move from wheelchair basketball in 2027 to para climbing in 2028, para ice hockey in 2029 and para snowboarding in 2030.

The Mint says public participation helped determine which sports would appear. From January 22 through February 20, 2025, Americans were invited to review a list of potential sports and submit their preferences through an online survey. The list was developed in consultation with the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition and the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

“Participation in sports teaches teamwork, perseverance, and the value of working toward a common goal,” said Mint Director Paul Hollis. “Through the Youth Sports Coin Collection, the Mint has a unique opportunity to instill a sense of national pride and to celebrate the role sports play in the lives of all Americans.”

The Youth Sports Coin Collection follows the Mint’s one-year 2026 Semiquincentennial circulating coin program, which introduced special designs celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. CollectiblesNews.com recently covered the Gettysburg Address Quarter, the final quarter in that 2026 series.

For collectors, 2027 will therefore mark another major reset for circulating U.S. coinage. Instead of returning to a single permanent quarter reverse after the Semiquincentennial, the Mint will move directly into a new multi-design program with five new quarters every year through 2030, along with an annually changing Paralympic half dollar.
