1966 Topps Batman ‘Rookie Card’ PSA 9 Sells for Record $219,600 at Heritage Auctions

A 1966 Topps Batman “The Batman” #1 graded PSA Mint 9 has sold for $219,600 at Heritage Auctions, setting a new public auction record for one of the most important vintage Batman trading cards. The card drew a $180,000 winning bid during Heritage’s October 23-25 Fall Sports Catalog Auction. With the auction house’s 22% buyer’s premium, the final price reached $219,600. The result also exceeded Heritage’s pre-auction guide value of $200,000 and up.
Often described by collectors as Batman’s “rookie card,” The Batman #1 leads Topps’ original 55-card Black Bat set from 1966. The series arrived during the surge in Batman popularity surrounding the ABC television series starring Adam West and Burt Ward, turning the character’s adventures into a sequence of vividly illustrated trading cards.
The front of Card #1 features Batman in action against a red background with the Bat-Signal above him. Heritage credits celebrated illustrator Norman Saunders and comic artist Bob Powell with the artwork for the Black Bat series. Saunders was already well known among non-sports card collectors for his work on Topps’ 1962 Mars Attacks set.
Each card in the Black Bat set featured painted artwork on the front and a portion of an unfolding story on its orange reverse. The black bat-shaped logo distinguished the original series from the Red Bat and Blue Bat cards that followed.
What separates the newly sold example from nearly every other surviving copy is its condition. Heritage said that, at the time the card was cataloged, only 13 examples had received a PSA Mint 9 grade and none had been certified PSA Gem Mint 10. That leaves PSA 9 as the highest grade represented in PSA’s population for the card. Heritage pointed to several condition challenges that make high-grade examples particularly difficult to find after 60 years, including centering, corner wear, print quality and the vulnerability of the card’s colored borders.
The $219,600 sale establishes a new benchmark for the card. Another PSA 9 example sold through Heritage for $131,250 in December 2025, meaning the latest result increased the public auction record by $88,350 in less than a year. The jump is even more dramatic compared with July 2024, when a PSA 9 example sold for $45,000. In a little over two years, the top public price for the card has climbed from $45,000 to nearly $220,000.
The Batman card was sold in the same Heritage Fall Sports Catalog Auction that produced another major result at the opposite end of the trading card spectrum. As CollectiblesNews.com reported, a restored 1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner graded PSA Authentic (Restored) sold for $1,982,500. The Wagner carried a Sweet Caporal 150/25 advertising back and had undergone professional restoration, including trimmed borders and added color in areas intended to reduce the appearance of creasing. Despite those alterations, the card still approached $2 million.
The two sales show the range of high-end cards attracting serious bidding in the same Heritage auction. The Wagner remains one of the defining trophies of baseball card collecting, while the 1966 Topps Batman #1 occupies a similarly important position within vintage non-sports cards.
The record-setting 1966 Topps Batman #1 was offered as Lot 81339 in Heritage’s Fall Sports Catalog Auction. Its $219,600 final price now stands as the new public auction benchmark for the card.
