DC Announces Absolute Justice and Major New 2027 Comic Series

Absolute Justice

DC is bringing the heroes of its Absolute Universe together in Absolute Justice, a new five-issue special event limited series announced during New York Comic Con. Written by Jason Aaron with art by Juan Ferreyra, Absolute Justice will see the Absolute Universe’s Martian Manhunter call on Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern Jo Mullein for what DC describes as a “very special case.” It was the only new title announced during DC’s Absolute Universe panel at NYCC.

DC also confirmed that the event will not include tie-ins or interrupt any of the ongoing Absolute titles. Instead, the individual creative teams will be able to continue their existing stories while Absolute Justice unfolds separately across its five issues.

Absolute Justice was one of a number of new comics DC revealed at New York Comic Con that are planned for 2027. Among the DC Black Label announcements was Green Lantern: Dying of the Light from Jason Aaron and Tirso. Set 20 years in the future, the story finds Hal Jordan imprisoned in an intergalactic prison before gaining access to a depowered Green Lantern ring with very limited construct abilities. Aaron also teased that a number of familiar Lanterns will appear.

DC also announced Joker/Harley: Malicious Intent from Kami Garcia, Mico Suayan, Cat Staggs and Jason Badower. The series continues from Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity but is designed so readers can experience the follow-up on its own. In addition to Harley Quinn and Joker, DC says Black Canary and Selina Kyle will appear, along with black-and-white flashbacks.

A new series titled DC Black Label Presents will take a different approach from the imprint’s usual miniseries format with standalone 48-page stories. The first three announced installments will feature Zatanna by Terry and Rachel Dodson, Poison Ivy by Amy Reeder, and OMAC by Denys Cowan and Ho Che Anderson.

DC’s Vertigo announcements included Hide Nor Hair from Adam Smith and Bob Quinn, centered on Mallory, a 1950s makeup and special effects artist whose horror masks come alive and begin speaking to her. Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso are also returning with 100 Bullets: Enemigos, a new seven-issue miniseries following surviving characters from the original 100 Bullets.

The romantic fantasy webcomic Dreambound by Ted Brandt, Ro Stein and “Sadie Wilson-Finley” is also headed to print. DC revealed that Dreambound is connected to the previously announced Vertigo comic Fanatic by Grace Ellis and Hannah Templer, with the two titles influencing one another.

During the DC Next Level panel, the publisher revealed The Swamp Thing: Hallowed Ground from Steve Foxe and Ricardo Federici. DC offered few story details, although Joshua Williamson showed early black-and-white artwork from the upcoming series.

Starfire will also receive a new solo series from Alyssa Wong and Belen Ortega. DC says the story follows Starfire back to a Tamaran under siege, with Blackfire expected to play a significant role. The project was described during the panel as “Red Sonja meets One Piece.”

Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora are also teaming for a Superboy-Prime Special. Williamson described his goal as giving Superboy-Prime a redemption story, with the special ultimately sending the character back home.

DC closed out its new title announcements with Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 3 from Brian Buccellato and Christian Duce. Jim Lee described the new installment as the “third act” of the collaboration with Legendary Comics. This time, the Crime Syndicate will take a larger role, bringing monstrous titans from alternate universes to invade Earth.
