Pokémon, 100 Thieves and Modernica Launch $725 Collectible Chairs

Pokémon is moving into collectible furniture with a new collaboration from 100 Thieves and Modernica built around four of the franchise’s most recognizable characters. The Pokémon + 100 Thieves by Modernica collection includes four handcrafted fiberglass Case Study Shell Chairs featuring Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle and Pikachu. Each chair is priced at $725 and will launch September 25 exclusively through 100 Thieves.

Rather than simply placing a character image on a standard chair, the collaboration uses detailed artwork inspired by fine china and porcelain designs. The illustrations cover the full surface of each chair, giving every version its own visual identity while keeping a consistent porcelain-style look across the collection. 100 Thieves describes the project as an attempt to blur the line between functional furniture and collectible art.

Modernica is producing the chairs by hand in Los Angeles using fiberglass construction methods the company has used since 1989. Each shell is made from layers of fiberglass combined with pigmented resin. That process creates natural differences in fiber pattern, pigmentation and translucency from chair to chair, meaning no two examples will be completely identical.

The four designs use a Porcelain White and Fine China Blue color scheme and are paired with a zinc-colored Eiffel base. Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle and Pikachu each receive their own version, with the character artwork worked across the chair rather than confined to a single logo or panel. That gives the collection a very different feel from typical Pokémon merchandise.

The chairs are full-size pieces of furniture, but the handmade fiberglass construction, character-specific artwork and intentionally limited production make them closer to display pieces than ordinary licensed seating. 100 Thieves says the collection will be produced in “extremely limited units,” although it has not disclosed an exact production number. Purchases will be limited to one chair per customer. Shipping will be available only in the United States and Japan, and 100 Thieves says returns and exchanges will not be accepted for the collection.

The collaboration also stands out because of Modernica’s place in mid-century modern furniture design. The Los Angeles manufacturer is known for handcrafted fiberglass furniture, and the Pokémon collection keeps that construction style while replacing a traditional solid-color shell with edge-to-edge character artwork.
