U.S. Mint Releases Special 9/11 ‘Never Forget’ Enduring Liberty Half Dollars
The U.S. Mint has opened pre-orders for a special version of its 2026 Enduring Liberty Half Dollar honoring the victims, survivors and first responders of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The circulating-quality half dollars carry a special “9-11-01” privy mark surrounded by the words “NEVER FORGET.” The Mint says the coins commemorate those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as well as February 26, 1993.
Unlike a commemorative coin with an entirely different design, the special issue uses the same Enduring Liberty half dollar created for America’s 250th anniversary, with the added 9/11 privy mark distinguishing it from the regular version. The coins are being offered in a 20-coin roll and a 100-coin bag, with prices ranging from $40 to $100 depending on the product. All of the special 9/11 coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint and carry a “P” mint mark.
Pre-orders opened September 10 and will continue through September 25 at 3 PM ET. The Mint expects shipping to begin December 3. There is currently no announced mintage limit, product limit or household order limit. The half dollar itself is also unusual for 2026. For America’s Semiquincentennial, the Mint temporarily replaced the Kennedy design that has appeared on the denomination for more than 60 years. The Kennedy portrait is scheduled to return in 2027.
The obverse of the 2026 Enduring Liberty half dollar features a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty looking toward the future. It carries the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “1776 ~ 2026.”
On the reverse, Liberty passes her torch to a new generation. The design includes the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “HALF DOLLAR,” along with James Madison’s words, “KNOWLEDGE IS THE ONLY GUARDIAN OF TRUE LIBERTY.”
The special 9/11 version adds another collecting angle to what was already going to be a one-year half dollar design. “These unique Enduring Liberty Half Dollars embody the honor and bravery of the victims, survivors, and first responders of those fateful terrorist attacks,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
U.S. Mint Director Paul Hollis added, “Offering these special coins to a greater number of Americans affords more of us a tangible reminder of how the Nation came together on that fateful day, and provides us opportunity to educate younger generations, many of whom were not even born, about the sacrifices made.”
The coins are made from the standard copper-nickel clad composition used for the half dollar, weigh 11.34 grams and measure 30.61 millimeters in diameter. The edge is reeded.
The special 2026 9/11 Enduring Liberty Half Dollar rolls and bags are available for pre-order directly from the U.S. Mint through September 25.
