Barbie Celebrates Marilyn Monroe’s 100th Birthday With New Signature Doll

Mattel is celebrating Marilyn Monroe’s 100th birthday with a new Barbie Signature doll inspired by the Hollywood icon. The Barbie Signature Marilyn Monroe Doll is available for pre-order through Mattel Creations for $81 and recreates one of Monroe’s most recognizable glamorous looks.
The doll wears a pink gown with an oversized bow, long opera gloves and sparkling jewelry. Her platinum-blonde hair is styled in Monroe’s familiar short waves, giving the release a strong Old Hollywood feel. Mattel is releasing the doll during the centennial year of Monroe’s birth. She was born in 1926 and remains one of the most recognizable stars of classic Hollywood, with her films, photographs, costumes and personal memorabilia still widely collected.
The doll uses the Aphrodite face sculpt and Model Muse body. Robert Best designed the doll, while Diana Leto handled the packaging. Mattel classifies the release as part of the Barbie Signature Black Label line. Each doll comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and a display stand. The presentation is clearly aimed at collectors, with the packaging designed to complement the doll rather than simply serve as a box to be discarded.
Monroe has appeared in Barbie form before, but the 100th anniversary gives this release a clear milestone behind it. Instead of trying to recreate several different moments from her career, Mattel has focused on one classic look and built the doll around that image.
The Barbie Signature Marilyn Monroe Doll is priced at $81 and is currently available for pre-order through Mattel Creations.
