New Buffy the Vampire Slayer Polly Pocket Compact Revealed by Mattel

Mattel is shrinking Sunnydale down to pocket size with a new Polly Pocket collectible based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The $33 Polly Pocket Buffy the Vampire Slayer Compact brings Buffy Summers, Willow Rosenberg and Angel together as micro figures inside a miniature playset built around two familiar locations from the series: Sunnydale High and Restfield Cemetery. The collectible is currently listed on Mattel Creations.

The upper half of the compact recreates parts of Sunnydale High, including the library and a classroom where the Scoobies can gather. The lower section shifts to Restfield Cemetery, complete with gravestones for Tara, Joyce Summers and Buffy herself. Mattel even worked one of the show’s more memorable storylines into the compact. Buffy’s grave can be opened so the Buffy micro figure can be placed inside, allowing fans to recreate her resurrection.

The three included figures are joined by a miniature stake and a Vampyr book accessory, both of which can be held by the characters. That gives the set a little more interaction than a straightforward display piece while still keeping the focus on recognizable details from the series.

The outside of the compact is just as tied to Buffy. Mattel gave it a gothic-style design featuring a lineup of characters and symbols from the show, while a lenticular element changes the stylized cover scene depending on how the compact is tilted.

Mattel also designed the window-box packaging with additional artwork inspired by the series, making it possible to display the compact without removing it from the box. That makes the release another example of Polly Pocket being used less as a traditional children’s toy line and more as a vehicle for pop-culture collectibles. In this case, the appeal comes from how much recognizable Buffy imagery Mattel managed to fit into the small format.

The Buffy compact also avoids trying to cover the entire series. Instead, it concentrates on a handful of characters, Sunnydale High and Restfield Cemetery, giving the set a clear visual identity tied closely to the show’s early supernatural world.
