LeBron James Gold Refractor Rookie Sells for Record $1.63 Million at Alt

One of LeBron James’ most important Topps Chrome rookie cards has a new record price. A 2003-04 Topps Chrome Gold Refractor LeBron James rookie graded PSA 10 sold for $1,632,522 at Alt, setting a new high for the card.

Alt announced the sale on X, saying the result established a record for the Gold Refractor. The card comes from James’ 2003-04 rookie season and is the Gold Refractor parallel of his Topps Chrome No. 111. Only 50 Gold Refractors were produced, putting it among the toughest versions of one of the hobby’s signature modern basketball rookie cards.

Condition makes the Alt example even tougher. PSA currently lists just 10 copies of the Gold Refractor in PSA 10, with none graded higher. The $1.63 million result continues a sharp rise in public auction prices for PSA 10 examples of the card over the past two years.

In October 2024, a Gold Refractor numbered 30/50 and graded PSA 10 sold for $645,000 at Heritage Auctions. Heritage’s auction attracted 18 bids and closed on October 4, 2024. The card crossed the seven-figure mark at public auction in January 2026. A different PSA 10 example, numbered 6/50, sold for $1.11 million at Fanatics Collect on January 23. That auction drew 41 bids.

Now, less than eight months later, the Alt sale has pushed the public auction benchmark to $1,632,522. The progression is striking. A PSA 10 example went from $645,000 at Heritage in October 2024 to $1.11 million at Fanatics Collect in January 2026 and now more than $1.63 million at Alt.

The Gold Refractor has several things working in its favor with high-end collectors. It comes from James’ rookie season, carries the familiar Topps Chrome branding and is limited to just 50 copies. It is also a card without an autograph, patch or other memorabilia component. Its appeal is built around the combination of James, his rookie season, the Topps Chrome brand, the Gold Refractor parallel, the limited print run and the condition.
