Image Comics Plans First Official Whatnot Drop With Exclusive Spawn 77 #1 Variant

Image Comics is heading to Whatnot for its first official drop, and it is bringing an exclusive Spawn comic along for the debut. The event is scheduled for September 9 at 6 PM ET and will feature an exclusive variant of Spawn 77 #1 priced at $40. The cover features artwork by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and pays tribute to one of the most recognizable comic covers of his career, Amazing Spider-Man #300.
That connection gives the variant a little more history than the typical retailer-exclusive cover. McFarlane drew the original Amazing Spider-Man #300 cover, and the composition has been recreated and referenced countless times since. This time, McFarlane is revisiting his own famous design for a Spawn release.
The comic itself also looks back to the character’s beginnings. According to Image Comics, McFarlane first came up with the idea for Spawn in 1977, decades before the character made his published debut. Spawn 77 brings that early vision into the current Spawn Universe through a collaboration between McFarlane and artist Mark Spears. Spawn has grown far beyond the comics since then, expanding into action figures, video games, animation and film while building an international following. That long history has also created a sizable collecting market around Spawn comics, particularly first issues, low-print variants and McFarlane covers.
The September 9 release will be sold through Image Comics’ official Whatnot account as part of the publisher’s first official drop on the platform. Fans can bookmark the upcoming Whatnot event ahead of the sale. Image Comics says collectors can also follow its Whatnot account for future drops and surprise events.
