LEGO Reveals First PlayStation Console Set With Hidden Gran Turismo and Ape Escape Builds

LEGO and PlayStation are turning one of the most recognizable video game consoles of the 1990s into a display piece with the reveal of the new LEGO PlayStation set. The 1,911-piece set recreates the original grey PlayStation console along with its first controller in near 1:1 scale. Designed for adult builders and collectors, LEGO PlayStation set No. 72306 will be released in October for $179.99.

LEGO has packed several interactive details into the build. The controller can be plugged into the brick-built console, while the Open and Power buttons are functional. The finished console measures more than 2.5 inches high, 10.5 inches wide and 7.5 inches deep.

One of the more unusual features is hidden inside. Opening the console reveals two buildable miniature scenes based on classic PlayStation games. One recreates a Gran Turismo track complete with tiny racing cars, while the other pays tribute to Ape Escape with a scene featuring the game’s familiar red or blue monkey helmet. Both dioramas can remain concealed inside the console or be removed and displayed separately. The choice of games places the set firmly in the era of the original PlayStation. Gran Turismo debuted in 1997, while Ape Escape followed in 1999, giving the model another layer of nostalgia beyond simply reproducing the hardware.

The release also stands out as LEGO continues to expand its lineup of display sets built around video game properties. LEGO has worked with PlayStation before on sets inspired by the Horizon games, but this is the first time the original PlayStation console and controller themselves have been recreated as a LEGO set.

LEGO revealed the set during PlayStation’s State of Play broadcast on September 3. LEGO Insiders will receive early access beginning October 1, with the general release following October 4 through LEGO.com, LEGO Stores and select retailers.
