Upper Deck Teases Neopets Battledome TCG: Return of Dr. Sloth With 200+ New Cards and Alt Art

Neopets Battledome TCG: Return of Dr. Sloth

Dr. Sloth is returning to Neopia, and Upper Deck is teasing a sizable new expansion for the Neopets Battledome Trading Card Game. The upcoming Return of Dr. Sloth set will include more than 200 new cards, a new card rarity, two new teams, a Purple Base Neopet and alternate-art cards. Upper Deck revealed the first details in a teaser for the expansion, while deliberately holding back some information to avoid spoiling the full set.

The theme centers on Dr. Sloth making another attempt to take control of Neopia after years of being considered defeated. Upper Deck specifically points to the Virtupets Space Station in its setup for the expansion, giving the set a strong Sloth and Virtupets identity. The confirmation of a new rarity and alternate art may be the most immediately interesting part of the announcement. Upper Deck has not yet explained what the new rarity will be or how frequently those cards will appear, leaving two potentially important chase elements still under wraps.

The company did reveal several card names that will appear in Return of Dr. Sloth, including Transmogrification Potion, Obliteratoes, Randomly Firing Freeze Ray, Dwoobaphone, Evil Sloth Clone, Wheelie, Virtupets Militia and Primary Grundo Bot RZ894.

Upper Deck also shared fragments of card effects, giving players an early sense of what some of the new mechanics could look like. The teased effects include fetching cards from a deck, destroying cards on either side of the Battledome, voiding targeted cards and dealing additional damage based on cards destroyed. One particularly aggressive excerpt allows four additional attacks after gaining 10 Attack, 10 Defense and 10 Agility through the end of the following turn.

Another teased effect randomly destroys a card from an opponent’s inventory and provides an extra benefit if the destroyed card is a Legend, while a separate card can target and destroy multiple cards in the Battledome before dealing damage for each one removed.

Upper Deck has not yet provided a complete checklist, release date or full explanation of the new rarity and teams. The company is instead rolling out details gradually through additional teasers and its social channels.
