UEFA Champions League Debut Patches Coming to 1-of-1 Autographed Topps Cards

UEFA Champions League Logo

Topps is bringing the debut-patch concept to European soccer. Beginning with the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League season, players making their first-ever appearance in the competition will wear a special UEFA Champions League Debut Patch. After the match, that patch will be removed from the player’s jersey and eventually placed into a signed one-of-one Topps trading card.

The program was created by UEFA and UC3 in collaboration with Topps and is expected to begin with Matchday 1 of the new Champions League campaign. The patch is incorporated directly into the familiar Champions League Starball badge worn on the player’s sleeve. A removable blue “DEBUT” element identifies the player as making his first appearance in the competition.

It only counts once the player actually gets onto the field. A substitute making his first Champions League appearance is eligible, but simply being named to the squad or sitting on the bench does not qualify. Once a player has made that debut, he will never wear the patch again, even if he later joins another Champions League club. That one-time use is what gives the resulting cards their appeal.

After the game, the blue debut portion is removed from the match-worn shirt, identified, authenticated and securely packaged with a Certificate of Authenticity before being transferred to Topps. The company will then incorporate the actual game-worn patch into a one-of-one trading card signed by the player. Topps highlighted the new program on social media Tuesday, giving collectors their first look at the patch and the concept behind the cards.

Each Debut Patch will have been worn during the exact match in which the player made his first Champions League appearance. That gives every card a direct connection to a specific moment in the player’s career. The jersey does not completely lose its debut connection once the removable section is taken off. UEFA says the underlying Starball badge retains a visual reference to the player’s first appearance, allowing the shirt itself to remain a piece of memorabilia for the player.

The design and placement of the patch were developed with Topps and official patch supplier ID Unlimited. Collectors will have to wait a little longer to learn exactly where the first cards will appear. Topps says the Debut Patch cards will be included in future UEFA Champions League products, with additional details on the specific collections still to come.

The 2026-27 Champions League league phase begins September 8, meaning the first group of debut patches could be worn within days.
