Pokémon Wild Card Animated Film Will Put the Pokémon TCG in the Spotlight

Pokemon Wild Card

The Pokémon Trading Card Game is getting its own feature-length animated movie. The Pokémon Company has announced Pokémon: Wild Card, a new film coming in 2027 that follows a Pokémon TCG player and their partner Mimikyu. The project was revealed during the closing ceremonies of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, where fans also got a first teaser.

That premise immediately sets Wild Card apart from previous Pokémon movies. Rather than simply featuring Pokémon battles, the story is being built around someone who plays the trading card game itself. Pokémon has not revealed much about the plot yet, but the teaser establishes the central pairing of the unnamed player and Mimikyu as they pursue their goals together.

The film will be directed by Katsuhiko Kitada, with character designs by Akemi Hayashi. STORY inc. is producing the project, while CloverWorks is handling animation production. Pokémon has not announced any Wild Card promotional cards, special sets or other related TCG products so far. Still, a feature built around the card game creates plenty of room for future releases, especially as the movie gets closer to its 2027 debut.

Mimikyu’s role could also make the film especially interesting to collectors. The Pokémon is not simply appearing in the movie but is positioned as the main character’s partner, giving it a central place in the story and potentially in any merchandise that eventually accompanies the film.

Wild Card also marks Pokémon’s return to feature-length animation after several years without a new movie in the format. An exact release date and additional story details have not yet been announced.
