Avengers: Doomsday Cheetos Has Collectors Hungry

Avengers: Doomsday

Avengers: Doomsday merchandise is beginning to show up in some unexpected places, and the latest collectibles getting Marvel fans talking can be found in the snack aisle. Special Avengers: Doomsday Cheetos bags featuring characters from the upcoming Marvel Studios movie have begun appearing overseas, with photos quickly spreading across X and Reddit. The packages feature different characters and flavors, turning what would normally be disposable snack bags into another piece of promotional memorabilia for collectors to track down.

Among the designs spotted so far are Doctor Doom, Mystique, Ant-Man and the Human Torch. The flavors breakdown as Doctor Doom as Salted Toffee, Mystique as Cheese & Ketchup, Ant-Man as Ketchup, and Human Torch as Pizza. Yummy!

One of the most noticeable packages features Joseph Quinn’s Human Torch on Pizza-flavored Cheetos. The artwork puts Johnny Storm prominently across the front of the bag, making the package itself the main collectible element of the promotion. And fans immediately noticed an obvious missed opportunity. “The fact that the Human Torch cheetos aren’t flamin hot, what are we doing here?” one Reddit user joked after seeing the Pizza-flavored bag.

Another fan admitted the unusual flavor was part of the appeal, writing that it “sounds like a bizarre combo but I’d totally try it just for the novelty.” The Human Torch version has reportedly been found in Poland and Spain, including at a supermarket in Pontevedra, Spain.

Doctor Doom may have the strangest flavor of the group. Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor von Doom appears on a Salted Toffee Cheetos bag, an unusual sweet-and-savory combination that has generated plenty of discussion as photos have circulated online. Mystique gets her own Cheese & Ketchup variety. A shopper who found the bag at a Biedronka store in Poland posted it to Reddit, prompting one person to joke, “That ketchup flavor choice is the real villain here.”

The Mystique design also produced one of the funnier responses to the promotion. After someone showed the package to his girlfriend, her reaction was: “Are they pretending to be something else?” Another commenter quickly pointed out that it might be “the most Mystique question you could ask about a bag of Cheetos.”

Another response captured the nostalgia that could make the bags particularly interesting to collectors: “This feels nostalgic, reminds me of the 90s with tazos etc.” That comparison gets at why these packages are drawing attention beyond people simply wanting to try a strange Cheetos flavor. Movie and fast-food promotions from previous decades have created an entire secondary collecting category around objects that were originally designed to be thrown away. Cereal boxes, soda cans, chip bags, cups and restaurant packaging can become surprisingly difficult to find intact once a campaign ends.

There does not appear to be a card, figure or other prize hidden inside the bags based on what has surfaced so far. The collectible is the packaging itself, meaning anyone trying to assemble a complete Avengers: Doomsday Cheetos set will need to find each character-and-flavor combination. That could become more challenging if the promotion remains limited to certain international markets. There has been no confirmed announcement so far that these exact Avengers: Doomsday Cheetos packages will receive a U.S. release.

Another question is whether the four characters seen so far represent the complete collection. With Avengers: Doomsday bringing together the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men and other Marvel characters, Cheetos has plenty of possibilities if additional designs are still waiting to appear.
