Panini Brings Sonic the Hedgehog to Trading Cards With Kaboom!, Color Blast and 1-of-1 Prizms

Sonic the Hedgehog is racing into the trading card hobby with a new Panini collection built around characters from across the franchise’s history. Panini announced the Sonic the Hedgehog trading card release, describing a checklist that brings together classic and modern versions of characters from throughout the Sonic universe. Sonic will be joined by familiar names including Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Dr. Eggman, giving the set a mix of heroes, allies and villains from different eras of the franchise.
The bigger chase cards will come through several insert sets. Panini says collectors can find Negative Space, Eggman Empire and Artistry in Motion inserts, each using its own design approach to showcase the characters. Two of Panini’s best-known ultra-rare insert brands are also making the jump to Sonic. Color Blast and Kaboom! cards featuring Sonic and other characters will be among the hardest cards to find in the release.
Numbered parallels will push the rarity even further. Tie-Dye Prizms will be limited to just five copies, while Black Prizms will be true 1-of-1 cards. That gives collectors a range of potential chase pieces beyond the standard character checklist and inserts.
Panini has also revealed the configuration for Hobby boxes. Each pack will contain six cards, with six packs in every box and 12 boxes in a case. Hobby won’t be the only format, however, as Panini says Hobby Preferred and retail configurations are also planned.
The collection is designed to cover Sonic’s history rather than focus on a single game or era. By combining classic and modern character designs with scarce Prizm parallels and established Panini chase inserts like Kaboom! and Color Blast, the release gives Sonic fans several different ways to build a collection around the long-running video game franchise.
Panini has not yet provided pricing or a release date in its initial announcement. More details on the Sonic the Hedgehog trading card collection are expected as the product gets closer to release.
