Topps Bringing 1-of-1 Rookie Debut Patch Autograph Cards to the NFL

One of the biggest rookie-card concepts in the hobby is coming to the NFL. Topps announced Wednesday that beginning with the 2026 season, NFL rookies will wear special Debut Patches on their jerseys before those patches eventually make their way into one-of-one autographed trading cards.

According to the Topps announcement, all NFL rookies will wear a Debut Patch beginning this season. Once a player makes his on-field debut, the patch will be removed from the jersey and preserved for that player’s trading card. Each patch will then be placed into a 1-of-1 card signed by the rookie who wore it. That means every player participating in the program will have a single autographed card containing the actual patch from his NFL debut.

Collectors won’t find the cards in packs this yearr, however. Topps says the NFL Rookie Debut Patch autograph cards will be inserted into sealed trading card packs scheduled for release in 2027.

The announcement immediately creates an entirely new chase around the 2026 NFL rookie class. Unlike a traditional numbered parallel or memorabilia card, there will be only one Debut Patch card for each participating rookie, with the memorabilia tied directly to the moment that player first takes the field in the NFL.

Topps has already made the Debut Patch concept a major part of its other sports card programs. In baseball, players wear a special patch during their Major League debut before it is removed and used in a one-of-one Rookie Debut Patch Autograph card. The concept has since expanded into basketball as well.

Topps has not yet announced which specific 2027 products will contain the NFL Debut Patch cards.
