Michael Jordan Signed 1986 Fleer Rookie Buyback Card Sells for $1.2 Million at Heritage Auctions

A signed Michael Jordan rookie card created by Fleer as a limited buyback nearly 20 years after the original card was issued has sold for $1,204,750 at Heritage Auctions. The card is an original 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan #57 that was bought back, signed by Jordan and inserted into 2006-07 Fleer products as part of the company’s 20th anniversary celebration of the landmark 1986-87 basketball set.

This example is serial-numbered 11/23, meaning only 23 signed copies of the Jordan rookie were produced for the buyback program. Heritage sold it during its Summer Platinum Night Sports Auction for $1,204,750, including buyer’s premium. Beckett graded the card itself BGS NM-MT+ 8.5, while Jordan’s signature received a perfect BAS 10 autograph grade.

The appeal starts with the card underneath the signature. Jordan’s 1986 Fleer #57 has become the defining mainstream rookie card of his career and one of the most recognizable basketball cards ever produced. Fleer returned to original copies of that card for the 2006 promotion rather than creating a modern reproduction.

Jordan signed the front in blue ink, and Fleer added the card to its Rookie Buyback Autographs program before placing it into 2006-07 products. The card’s original 1986 Fleer design remains intact, while the autograph and serial numbering distinguish it from unsigned rookie examples.

Heritage noted the challenge of finding these cards more than two decades after their release. With a production run of just 23 copies, the signed buybacks appear publicly far less often than standard Jordan rookies. The 11/23 example also carries strong individual grades from Beckett. Its subgrades include 8.5 for centering, 9 for corners, 8 for edges and 8.5 for surface.
