U.S. Mint Freedom 250 Race Medal Limited to 15,000 Ahead of Washington IndyCar Event

2026 Freedom 250 Race Medal

The United States Mint is releasing a new collectible medal celebrating the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, with the limited-mintage piece set to open for pre-orders on August 21 at noon ET.

The 2026 Freedom 250 Race Medal is priced at $60 and has a maximum mintage of 15,000. The two-week ordering window will remain open through September 4 at 3 PM ET, with shipping expected to begin September 28. The Mint currently lists no household order limit.

Created in connection with the United States Semiquincentennial, the medal commemorates the Freedom 250 Grand Prix taking place August 22 and 23 in Washington, D.C. The event is described by the Mint as the first-ever NTT INDYCAR Series race in the nation’s capital. The 1.7-mile course around the National Mall will feature 147 laps covering 250 miles.

The medal’s obverse features an Indy Car inscribed with “USA” alongside a depiction of the United States Capitol. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FREEDOM 250” also appear on the design.

The reverse honors Roger Penske with a portrait accompanied by the inscriptions “MOTORSPORT PIONEER” and “ROGER PENSKE.”

For collectors, the medal will arrive encapsulated and housed in a black presentation box bearing the official United States Mint Seal. It will be struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a half dollar planchet and does not carry a mint mark.

The medal measures 1.205 inches in diameter and weighs 11.340 grams. It has a matte finish, plain edge and a clad composition of 8.33% nickel with the balance copper.

The Mint says production will be based on orders received during the ordering window, subject to the 15,000-piece mintage limit, and that no additional medals will be produced afterward. That gives the release a defined ceiling while allowing final production to depend on collector demand during the pre-order period.

“The Freedom 250 Race Medal captures the national pride, engineering advancements, and legacy of open-wheel racing,” U.S. Mint Director Paul Hollis said in the announcement, adding that the medal was created as a Semiquincentennial collectible for motorsport enthusiasts and numismatists.

The 2026 Freedom 250 Race Medal, item number 26DCRM, will be available for pre-order directly from the U.S. Mint beginning August 21 at noon ET for $60.
