eBay Expands Authenticity Guarantee to Collectible Coins Priced at $500 or More

eBay is expanding its Authenticity Guarantee program into collectible coins, giving buyers and sellers an added layer of protection on higher-value U.S. and World coins sold through the marketplace.

Eligible graded U.S. coins, graded World coins and raw U.S. coins priced at $500 or more will be professionally authenticated at no additional cost to buyers or sellers. The expansion makes coins the second collectibles category covered by eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee program, following the introduction of the service for trading cards in 2022.

PCGS will handle authentication for eligible coins through an expanded partnership between eBay and Collectors, the parent company of PCGS and PSA. Once an eligible coin is purchased, it will be sent to PCGS for a multi-point physical inspection before being forwarded to the buyer.

Authenticators will inspect each coin for authenticity, overall condition and general quality while also checking it against the original eBay listing description. Collectors will be able to identify qualifying listings by the blue Authenticity Guarantee badge displayed on eBay.

After a coin passes authentication, it will receive an e-tag attached to its protective packaging. The tamper-proof sticker includes a unique QR code that buyers can scan for additional information about the coin and its authentication journey. For sellers who accept returns, eligible returned coins will also be sent back through the authentication center so experts can verify that the same item, in the same condition, is being returned.

The initial rollout covers graded U.S. coins priced at $500 or more, graded World coins including Canadian coins priced at $500 or more, and raw U.S. coins priced at $500 or more. eBay said the service is beginning its rollout in the United States.

The move comes as coin collecting activity continues to grow on eBay. According to the company, searches for collectible coins increased by more than 30% from June 2025 to June 2026, while listings of historic coins grew by more than 40% over the same period. Collectors also searched for pennies more than 2,500 times per hour during the first half of 2026.

eBay has already been making changes to its coin marketplace ahead of the authentication rollout. In May, the company introduced standardized condition guidelines for collectible coins designed to give buyers clearer information about an item’s quality before making a purchase.

Every coin has a story, and we’re making it easier than ever for collectors to buy and sell with confidence while helping preserve the integrity of one of the world’s oldest collecting hobbies.”

The company is also increasing its presence in the wider numismatic community. eBay is funding five scholarships through the Professional Numismatists Guild NextGen Scholarship Program in 2026 and will serve as a key sponsor of the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money, which runs August 25 through August 29. It is also sponsoring PCGS’s Young Numismatist event at the show.

The addition of PCGS authentication gives eBay’s coin marketplace a process already familiar to trading card buyers using Authenticity Guarantee. Eligible coins will now make an additional stop for verification before reaching the buyer, with eBay covering the authentication service as part of the transaction.
