Cyberpunk Trading Card Game Taps Melee.gg for Organized Play After $28.3 Million Kickstarter

Cyberpunk Trading Card Game

The Cyberpunk Trading Card Game is getting ready to build out its competitive scene, with developer WeirdCo selecting Galactic Events Studio’s Melee.gg platform to power organized play for the new TCG. The partnership comes after the game drew 50,773 Kickstarter backers and more than $28.35 million in pledges before release, which the companies describe as the most successful crowdfunding campaign in gaming history.

The scale of the launch is already substantial. WeirdCo says more than 3,000 retail stores have signed up to sell Cyberpunk TCG products and host events, giving the game a sizable physical retail footprint before its organized play program is fully rolled out. Melee.gg will support event registration, tournament management, decklist and results workflows, reporting and future customization as the game expands from local play to regional and global competition.

Cyberpunk TCG is based on the world created by CD PROJEKT RED and sends players into Night City, where they build crews using characters from across the Cyberpunk franchise and compete for control of Gigs. WeirdCo says the social side of trading card games is central to its plans, with organized play intended to give players a structured way to meet, compete, trade and build communities around the new game.

“The community’s response to Cyberpunk TCG has been incredible to witness, and it also brings amazing challenges which we are excited to embrace,” said WeirdCo Co-Founder and President Elliot Cook. “At WeirdCo, our northstar is driving the human connection. Our players are ready to meet each other, play the game, and rise to the top of Night City, and it’s on us to make sure we provide them with enjoyable, intuitive, and stable Organized Play experiences. Galactic Events Studio gives us the reliability, scale, and flexibility to build an OP program worthy of the community that’s grown around us.”

A strong organized play system can help keep a new trading card game active beyond its initial product launch. WeirdCo is not only preparing to sell cards through thousands of stores, but is also building the infrastructure for regular tournaments and larger competitive events, giving players and collectors more reasons to stay involved with the game after opening their first products.

Galactic Events Studio says Melee.gg already supports major trading card game communities including Magic: The Gathering and Star Wars: Unlimited. Across its platforms, the company works with more than 8,100 stores in more than 70 countries, with localization available in 10 languages. That existing network gives WeirdCo a system designed to scale as Cyberpunk TCG grows.
