Ferrari Luce ‘Tailor Made’ Electric Car Sells for Record $40 Million at Auction
The Ferrari Luce “Tailor Made” Chassis 0 has sold for $40 million at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction, setting what appears to be a new world record for the highest price ever paid for a new car at auction. The 2026 Ferrari was specially configured through Ferrari’s Tailor Made program and carries the Chassis 0 designation as the first production chassis of the Luce program.
The sale is especially notable because the Luce is Ferrari’s first fully electric car, giving Chassis 0 added significance as the first production chassis from a major new chapter in the automaker’s history. Ferrari says the Luce uses a fully electric powertrain, making the record-setting auction result notable not only for its price but also for the model’s place in the company’s move into electric vehicles.
That $40 million result surpasses the previous new-car auction record by $14 million. The prior mark was set at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction in 2025, when a one-of-one Ferrari Daytona SP3 “Tailor Made” sold for $26 million. RM Sotheby’s described that result at the time as the highest price ever paid for a new car at auction.
The Chassis 0 designation gives the Luce additional significance for collectors, while “Tailor Made” refers to the unique specification created for this particular car. Ferrari’s Tailor Made program was used to give the car its own exterior, interior and other details rather than presenting it as a standard production configuration.
The car is finished in Madreperla Semi-Gloss, a special exterior developed specifically for this example. According to RM Sotheby’s, the finish uses a dedicated pigment that creates iridescent reflections shifting between green and violet depending on the intensity and angle of the light. The car also features dedicated wheels, bespoke brake calipers and Ferrari logos set against an optical-white background.
Inside, the Luce uses Perla Le Mans metallic leather with Grigio Corvara secondary elements. A dedicated plaque identifies the car as the first production chassis of the Luce program, further distinguishing Chassis 0 from the examples that will follow it.
The record-setting transaction was also a charity sale. Ferrari is donating the proceeds to future educational initiatives through The Ferrari Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity. RM Sotheby’s waived the buyer’s premium on the lot, making the full $40 million hammer price part of the charitable result.
The winning bidder will not receive the car immediately. RM Sotheby’s says the Luce will return to Maranello following the auction, with final delivery currently scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
The combination of Ferrari’s first fully electric model, the Chassis 0 designation, one-off Tailor Made specification and $40 million auction result gives this car immediate historical significance.
