Post Malone Takes His $2.64 Million One Ring Card Out of Its Holder and Plays It During Magic Game

Post Malone owns one of the most valuable Magic: The Gathering cards in existence, but apparently that does not mean it has to stay locked away.

During a new episode of Game Knights, Malone stunned the table by pulling out his one-of-one The One Ring card, which he purchased for $2.64 million, taking it out of its protective holder and actually playing it during a game of Magic: The Gathering.

The moment comes at about 42 minutes into the episode, “The Hobbit w/ Post Malone! | Game Knights 87,” after Malone initially announces that he is playing The One Ring.

At first, however, it is not the famous one-of-one card.

“I do have a cool version somewhere around here,” Malone says after the other players realize what he has played.

That prompts the obvious question from across the table: “Do you have a better version of that ring, though?”

Malone does.

“You’re Taking It Out of the Thing?”

Malone produces the unique One Ring and then makes a decision that immediately gets the attention of everyone at the table.

“I’m taking it out of the obnoxious big block,” Malone says.

The reaction is immediate.

“Wait, are you taking it out of the thing? You’re taking it out of the thing?” one player asks, before someone else warns, “Where are the drinks? Put the drinks away.”

Moments later, Malone puts the card into play as the table erupts.

Host Rachel Weeks explains the significance of what they are looking at, calling it the rarest and most exclusive card ever printed in Magic history and emphasizing that there is only one copy.

“It should be in a museum or in a vault,” she adds.

The group also jokes about the financial stakes of having the card sitting on the table.

“I’m very concerned about if anything happens to the one-of-one Ring. Our insurance doesn’t cover that,” host Josh Lee Kwai says.

Then He Actually Uses the Card

Malone does not simply take the card out for a quick appearance before putting it away.

He plays it.

After The One Ring enters the battlefield, the game continues normally. Malone gains the card’s protection effect and soon places a burden counter on it, taps it and draws a card.

That makes the scene particularly unusual from a collecting perspective. One of the hobby’s most famous modern cards is being treated not simply as a multimillion-dollar display piece, but as the game piece it was originally designed to be.

Post Malone Paid $2.64 Million for the One-of-One

The unique The One Ring was created for Magic: The Gathering’s The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth release. Post Malone ultimately purchased the card from collector Brook Trafton for $2.64 million.

That makes what happened on Game Knights very different from a collector bringing an ordinary high-end card onto a television set for display. Malone removed a card he paid $2.64 million for from its holder, placed it on the table alongside the other Magic cards and started putting counters on it as part of an actual game.

Granted the card was still slabbed and it was just the protective holder that Malone removed, it is still not the norm to see such a valuable card utilized in an actual game. While the slab would have likely protected the card from a drink spill, it’s not something anybody with a $2.64 card likely wants to test. Also, just think if Malone got a scratch on that slab and had to re-slab it.

For a collectible that one of the players suggested belongs in a museum or vault, Post Malone seems to have a different philosophy.

He owns The One Ring, and he is willing to play it.
