Pokémon GO Giving Every Trainer Special Mewtwo for 10th Anniversary

Pokémon GO is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a special Mewtwo that will be available to Trainers around the world through free Timed Research. The 10th Anniversary Celebration begins August 12 at 4 PM PDT and runs through September 6, 2026 at 11:59 PM local time.

During the event, Trainers can complete free Timed Research that leads to an encounter with a Mewtwo featuring maxed-out stats and a Special Background. The Mewtwo obtained through the Timed Research will also have the third Mega Level for Mega Mewtwo Y already unlocked.

For Pokémon collectors who also play Pokémon GO, the Special Background gives the anniversary Mewtwo an additional distinguishing feature beyond its maxed-out stats.

Pokémon GO described the Mewtwo as a special reward being shared with Trainers everywhere to mark 10 years of the game.

Timed Research Must Be Completed by September 6

The anniversary Mewtwo will not remain available indefinitely. Pokémon GO said the Timed Research expires, and all associated tasks must be completed and rewards claimed before September 6 at 11:59 PM local time.

There is also a distinction for Trainers who previously caught a Mewtwo during the in-person Times Square event on July 9. According to Pokémon GO, those Trainers will receive a Mewtwo with different stats and different rewards.

Pokémon GO also noted that Mewtwo featuring the Times Square background will become available again at some point in the future.

The 10th anniversary celebration gives players a limited window to add the specially designated Mewtwo to their Pokémon GO collections, with the free Timed Research available through September 6.
