Rare Russian and Costa Rican Coins Certified by NGC Lead Stack’s Bowers Global Showcase Auction

A group of high-end world and ancient coins certified by NGC will be offered in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Global Showcase Auction series, including major rarities from Russia and Costa Rica with estimates reaching as high as $400,000.

The auction series includes Sessions A, B and C, which are scheduled to close from August 31 through September 4, 2026. One of the biggest highlights is a Russia 1896 AT 10 Rubles Gold Pattern graded NGC PF 63 Cameo. The coin carries an estimate of $200,000 to $400,000 and is the sole-highest graded example among just three listed in the NGC Census.

NGC noted that the coin dates to the coronation year of Nicholas II and the monetary reforms that shaped the coinage of his reign.

Another major lot is a Costa Rica 1828CR F Central American Republic 8 Escudos graded NGC MS 63+. The coin is estimated at $200,000 to $300,000. NGC said it was struck while Costa Rica was part of the Federal Republic of Central America, which lasted less than two decades.

The 8 Escudos had a reported mintage of 5,302 pieces, and this example is tied for the highest grade among 21 examples in the NGC Census.

50-Ounce Krugerrand Estimated at Up to $300,000

The auction will also include a South Africa 2017 50-ounce Gold 50 Krugerrand issued for the coin’s 50th anniversary. The piece carries an NGC Signature Label signed by South African Mint Managing Director Tumi Tsehlo and is graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo. Stack’s Bowers estimates the coin at $250,000 to $300,000.

Several additional Russian rarities are also included.

A Russia 1902 37.5 Rubles graded NGC MS 61 carries an estimate of $100,000 to $200,000, while a Russia 1895 5 Rubles Gold Pattern is estimated at $100,000 to $150,000.

Spanish and British Coins Also Featured

A Spain 1607 C Segovia 4 Escudos graded NGC MS 62 is estimated at $75,000 to $125,000. A Great Britain 1748 5 Guineas graded NGC MS 61 carries an estimate of $50,000 to $65,000.

The auction also includes a Spain 1713S M 8 Escudos graded NGC MS 64+ with an estimate of $15,000 to $25,000, along with a Mexico 1893CN M Gold 2.5 Pesos graded NGC MS 63 carrying the same $15,000 to $25,000 estimate.

Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Global Showcase Auction series includes hundreds of world and ancient coins certified by NGC, with the three sessions closing between August 31 and September 4.
