Michael Jordan-Signed 1986-87 Fleer Wax Box Sells for $900,100 on eBay

Update: While the original auction ended showing a sold price of $1,488,100, eBay has issued an update indicating the actual final sale price was $900,100. No explanation for the price change was provided.
A full 36-pack box of 1986-87 Fleer Basketball signed and inscribed by Michael Jordan has sold for $1,488,100 on eBay, turning one of basketball card collecting’s most famous unopened products into a seven-figure collectible.
The box was offered by Upper Deck through the eBay account upperdeckxmichaeljordan and carried a one-of-one inscription from Jordan reading “Rookie Card Box.” The auction ended with a winning bid of $1,488,100.
The 1986-87 Fleer Basketball release is one of the most important sets in modern sports card collecting because it contains Jordan’s iconic Fleer rookie card. Rather than being opened in search of individual cards, however, the 36-pack box was sold as an autographed collectible in its own right.
According to the listing, Jordan personally signed the box and added the unique “Rookie Card Box” inscription. The autograph was authenticated through Upper Deck, and the item comes with a serial-numbered hologram and certificate of authenticity.
The sale also included a charitable component. Ten percent of the proceeds are designated to benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of America through eBay for Charity. Because of the value of the item, bidders were required to prequalify.
The seller also placed unusual delivery restrictions on the box. The winning bidder can pick it up in Durham, North Carolina, or have it hand-delivered within the United States.
At nearly $1.5 million, the result shows just how far demand can extend beyond individual Michael Jordan rookie cards themselves.
