CGC Adds 66 New Registry Sets for Sports Magazine Collectors

CGC has expanded its Registry with 66 new competitive set categories devoted to graded sports magazines.

The new sets cover issues of Sports Illustrated, Sport, The Ring and Slam, allowing collectors to organize and display certified magazines featuring many of the biggest names in sports history.

CGC said interest in certified magazines has grown rapidly, particularly for sports issues featuring popular athletes. The company pointed to the $126,000 sale of a CGC 9.8 newsstand copy of Michael Jordan’s 1984 Sports Illustrated “A Star is Born” issue as an example of the category’s growth.

The Registry expansion includes 24 new Sports Illustrated sets. Collectors can build groups centered on first cover appearances in basketball, baseball, football and hockey, along with athlete-specific sets for Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, Muhammad Ali, Wayne Gretzky and others.

CGC also created a set for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issues.

Another 22 sets have been added for Sport magazine. Those categories include first cover appearances and collections devoted to athletes such as Jackie Robinson, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, Joe DiMaggio, Sandy Koufax, Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali.

Boxing magazine collectors received 18 new Registry options for The Ring. The available sets include first boxing cover appearances and individual collections for Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, Floyd Mayweather, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Leonard and other champions.

Two new Slam magazine sets focus on Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

The launch follows CGC’s announcement that qualifying magazines will receive a “Newsstand Edition” designation on their certification labels.

CGC said more magazine Registry sets are planned. The first group was designed around some of the most popular sports publications and athletes of the past century.
