Most Valuable Doctor Doom Comic Has Sold for Six Figures as Avengers: Doomsday Raises Character’s Profile

With San Diego Comic Con 2026, Doctor Doom received one of the biggest spotlights in the character’s history as fan-favorite Robert Downey Jr. is playing the Marvel villain in Avengers: Doomsday.

Downey and the film’s cast promoted the upcoming film during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic Con 2026, just two years after Marvel first revealed his casting at Comic-Con.

For comic collectors, the attention once again places the focus on Fantastic Four #5, the 1962 Marvel comic containing the first appearance and origin of Doctor Doom. The issue is the most valuable comic primarily associated with the character and has produced multile six-figure auction results.

The highest documented public sale for Fantastic Four #5 on Heritage Auctions is $180,000.

A CGC 9.2 copy reached that price through Heritage Auctions on September 8, 2022. The amount included the auction house’s buyer’s premium.

A separate CGC 9.4 copy of Fantastic Four #5 with a CVA Exceptional designation was also offered through ComicLink in August 2022. According to ComicLink, the CGC 9.4 Fantastic Four #5 sold for $210,000 on August 18, 2022, which represented a record in any grade.

Those sales make Fantastic Four #5 the clear leader among Doctor Doom comics. Most copies are worth considerably less, but high-grade examples are scarce enough to generate six-figure bidding when they reach major auctions.

Other significant Doctor Doom collectibles include Fantastic Four #6, featuring his second appearance; The Amazing Spider-Man #5, his first appearance outside the Fantastic Four series; and Fantastic Four Annual #2, which expands his origin.

None has approached the public auction record for his debut.
