Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider Casting Puts Marvel Spotlight #5 and Other Key Collectible Comics Back in Focus

Ryan Gosling is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider, and that instantly puts the character’s most important comic books back in the spotlight.

Marvel Studios announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that Gosling will star in a new Ghost Rider movie, with Shawn Levy directing. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2028. For comic collectors, the announcement gives fresh attention to a character whose biggest keys have already been among the most important Bronze Age Marvel books in the hobby.

The most valuable Ghost Rider comic remains Marvel Spotlight #5 from 1972. The issue features the first appearance of Johnny Blaze as Ghost Rider, the Spirit of Vengeance. Marvel identifies the book as Johnny Blaze’s first appearance as Ghost Rider, and it has long been the central comic for collectors chasing the character’s debut.

It is also the clear heavyweight in the market. A CGC 9.8 copy of Marvel Spotlight #5 sold through Heritage Auctions for $264,000 in June 2021, setting a major benchmark for the book. Heritage’s listing described the issue as the origin and first appearances of Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze and Roxanne Simpson. While $264,000 is the record verified auction sale, Heritage Auctions does make reference to selling a copy for $360,000 in 2024, possibly it was a private sale.

The next major book is Ghost Rider #1 from 1973. After debuting in Marvel Spotlight, Johnny Blaze moved into his own ongoing series the following year. Ghost Rider #1 is the first issue of that original solo title, making it a major companion book to Marvel Spotlight #5. It does not usually command the same money as the first appearance, but it remains one of the most recognizable Ghost Rider covers and one of the key books from the character’s early run. The record price for a Ghost Rider #1 at auction is $26,400, which was a 9.8 copy sold through Heritage Auctions on January 14, 2022.

The Ghost Rider #1 from 1967 is another important part of the collecting picture, although it represents a different version of the name. Marvel describes the issue as featuring Carter Slade, a Western hero who used the Ghost Rider identity before Johnny Blaze became the supernatural motorcycle-riding Spirit of Vengeance.

Marvel Spotlight #6 and Marvel Spotlight #7 are also worth watching because they continue the earliest Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider appearances after his debut. Collectors who cannot afford to buy Marvel Spotlight #5 often look to those next issues as more attainable early appearances from the same original run.

For modern collectors, Ghost Rider #1 from 1990 is the key Danny Ketch book. Marvel identifies the issue as the first appearance of Danny Ketch as Ghost Rider. The 1990 series helped relaunch the character for a new generation and became one of the defining Ghost Rider runs of the era. With comic books having huge print runs in the 1990s, the Danny Ketch Ghost Rider first appearance is far more common than the Bronze Age keys.

All-New Ghost Rider #1 from 2014 is the main Robbie Reyes key. Marvel has pointed to the issue as the debut of Robbie Reyes, the car-driving Ghost Rider who later appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Gosling casting news is most likely to push attention first toward Marvel Spotlight #5 because Johnny Blaze remains the character most closely associated with Ghost Rider’s comic-book and movie legacy. Marvel’s announcement has not said which version of Ghost Rider Gosling will play, so collectors may also keep an eye on the broader group of Ghost Rider keys until more details are released.
