The Odyssey IMAX Film Camera Popcorn Bucket Becomes a Collectible Hit

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is already making noise at the box office, but collectors may be just as interested in the movie’s IMAX popcorn bucket.

IMAX released its first-ever collectible popcorn bucket to celebrate The Odyssey, and the item is not shaped like a character, helmet or standard movie prop. It is designed after the IMAX 15/65mm film camera, the large-format camera technology closely tied to Nolan’s biggest theatrical releases.

The IMAX Film Camera Popcorn Bucket is priced at $50 through the IMAX Store. IMAX says quantities are limited and that all sales are final. Orders are listed as starting to ship the week of November 9, and popcorn is not included.

The bucket is built as a tribute to IMAX film technology and the craft of filmmaking. The design includes a removable eyepiece and a viewfinder that lights up to reveal a scene from The Odyssey in IMAX’s exclusive 1.43:1 expanded aspect ratio.

That detail is what makes the bucket stand out from a normal theater collectible. It is not just a container with movie branding. It is a miniature nod to the film format itself, connecting the collectible directly to the way The Odyssey was shot and shown.

The product details list the bucket at 14 inches by 6.25 inches by 5.3 inches with the eyepiece removed. It weighs an estimated 1.26 pounds and is made from plastic, acrylic, PP and ABS. It also includes one LED light and an LR1130 battery.

The collectible ties directly into the larger IMAX story around The Odyssey. IMAX said the film delivered $52 million worldwide in its IMAX opening weekend, with the company calling it a record-breaking global debut. IMAX also said the movie is the first theatrical release shot entirely with IMAX 70mm film cameras.

IMAX accounted for 20% of The Odyssey’s global debut and that IMAX 70mm film locations alone delivered $6.3 million during opening weekend. Those 41 IMAX 70mm locations averaged $153,000 per screen.

IMAX also said the bucket sold out its first two drops almost instantly, with additional quantities made available through IMAX.com and IMAX locations worldwide for a limited time. That kind of demand puts the Film Camera Popcorn Bucket in the same conversation as other recent movie-theater collectibles that have become part of the release-weekend story.
